Passengers aboard the Sun and Fun Cruise ship, The Mermaid’s Tale, were not allowed to dock on Sunday as scheduled. During the cruise back from the Caribbean, several passengers developed gastrointestinal symptoms which seemed to develop rather quickly. Erring on the side of caution, passengers were quarantined to their cabins for the remaining two days of the cruise and are expected to be allowed to dock and disembark early Monday morning. The illnesses are now thought to be caused by food poisoning from a popular beach club on the last port stop of the cruise and not viral in nature. Medical personnel have been dispersed to the cruise ship and all affected passengers are expected to make a full recovery.
Cruise officials advise cruise passengers not to partake in the buffets at the local beach clubs as food items might have been stored at unsatisfactory temperatures for a few hours during the buffet. Foods left in the sunlight without proper refrigeration is a breeding ground for bacteria and foodborne illnesses. Officials advise it is always best to order from a menu when in doubt and save the buffet lines for the cruise ship days at sea.
